Childhood and adolescence are filled with growth, change, and new experiences. While many children and teens navigate these transitions successfully, others may struggle with anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, self-esteem, friendships, school stress, family changes, or major life transitions. Therapy provides a safe, supportive space where young people can better understand their emotions, develop healthy coping skills, and build confidence as they navigate life's challenges.

At Finding Balance Therapy & Wellness, our therapists work collaboratively with children, teens, and their families to create individualized treatment plans that support emotional well-being and healthy development. We believe every child deserves to feel heard, understood, and empowered with the tools they need to thrive at home, in school, and in their relationships.

Please note: Child, tween, and teen therapy is currently available for clients located in Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

What ages do you work with?

Our therapists specialize in working with school-age children, tweens, and teenagers. Every child develops differently, so we'll help determine whether our services are the right fit based on your child's age, developmental stage, and presenting concerns.

What concerns can therapy help with?

Therapy can support children and teens experiencing anxiety, depression, school-related stress, emotional regulation difficulties, ADHD, self-esteem concerns, friendship challenges, bullying, family transitions, grief, behavioral concerns, life changes, and other emotional or mental health challenges. We tailor treatment to each child's unique needs and goals.

How do I know if my child could benefit from therapy?

Every child has difficult days, but ongoing emotional or behavioral changes may be a sign that additional support would be helpful. If your child seems more withdrawn, anxious, irritable, overwhelmed, frequently worried, struggling at school, having difficulty with friendships, or experiencing changes in mood, sleep, or behavior that are affecting daily life, therapy may provide valuable support.

What happens during the first therapy session?

The first session focuses on getting to know your child, learning about your family's concerns, and discussing goals for therapy. Depending on your child's age, the therapist may spend time with both the parent and child together, as well as individually when appropriate. Building trust and creating a comfortable environment are important first steps in the therapeutic process.

What if my child is experiencing anxiety or depression?

nxiety and depression can look different in children and teens than they do in adults. Some young people become withdrawn or tearful, while others appear irritable, angry, perfectionistic, or complain of frequent headaches or stomachaches. Therapy helps children and teens better understand their emotions, develop healthy coping strategies, and build resilience while supporting parents in understanding how to help at home.

Can parents be involved in therapy?

Yes. Parents play an important role in supporting their child's progress. While every situation is different, therapists regularly collaborate with parents by providing updates, sharing strategies, and offering guidance to reinforce skills outside of sessions. Older teens are also provided with an appropriate level of privacy to support trust and therapeutic growth.

How do you help children and teens in therapy?

Our therapists use evidence-based approaches tailored to each child's age, personality, and goals. Therapy may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills, mindfulness, emotional regulation strategies, play-based interventions for younger children, strengths-based techniques, and practical coping skills that can be used in everyday life.

My child doesn't want to come to therapy. Should we still schedule an appointment?

This is a common concern for many parents. It's normal for children and teens to feel unsure about therapy, especially if it's their first experience. Our therapists focus on building a trusting relationship at your child's pace while creating a safe, welcoming environment where they can feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Is virtual therapy effective for children and teens?

Yes. Many children and teens adapt very well to telehealth therapy. Virtual sessions allow them to participate from the comfort of home while reducing travel time for busy families. Our therapists use engaging, age-appropriate strategies to help young clients remain connected and actively involved throughout the session.
